NEW PUBLICATION: Le monde d’après: Les conséquences de la COVID-19 sur les relations internationales

A new publication by CIPSS/CEPSI faculty members Jennifer Welsh and Frédéric Mérand brings together 50 professors from four universities across Montréal to ask questions about the state of international relations in the post-Covid world. COVID-19 caused the biggest global crisis of the early 21st century. For some, the repercussions have been swift and dramatic, with the pandemic pushing tens of millions of people into poverty and generating extreme food insecurity. For others, the transformations are still bubbling under the surface and questions remain as to whether the changes in society that it has brought about will last.

The return of geopolitics, with the war in Ukraine and tensions in Asia, makes the picture even more complex. As early as March 2020, there was an explosion of analysis on the short- and long-term consequences of the "long COVID" on international relations, and parallels were drawn with the collapse of Europe in the 1930s. While most commentators are pessimistic, some are hoping for positive change. In fact, this unprecedented crisis is forcing us to think about how, in the 'world after COVID’, we can improve the economy, social justice, the environment, human relations, health and political institutions, or ensure that they do not deteriorate further.
