Ph.D. Candidate, Political Science

McGill University

Bavo Stevens is a PhD candidate in political science at McGill University. He holds an MA in War Studies from King's College London and a BA in Political Science from the University of Chicago. His research focuses on authoritarian governance in Southeast Asia, specifically in the areas of policing and civil-military relations. He’s currently developing a PhD proposal under the supervision of Professor Erik Kuhonta examining how authoritarian regimes shape their police forces, and how these forces repress dissent while also maintaining law and order and fighting crime. He’s written on nationalism as a driver of political polarization in Thailand and how Thailand's asylum policy leaves asylum-seekers and refugees in a state of immobilized precarity.
